NZ Transport seals southern roadworks

The Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has announced that a number of maintenance and construction projects for state highways in the Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago district council areas are set to get underway.

Maintenance Contract Manager at NZ Transport Agency, Mark Stewart said some of the works would include overnight full road closures.

“Some of these projects will have a definite impact on road user journey times and because of this have been purposely deferred until after the school holiday/peak summer period,” Mr Stewart said.

“We expected to have high traffic volumes over the Christmas and New Year holiday period and around Chinese New Year,” he said.

“We were also aware of high impact events such as the Gibbston Winery Concert and decided to undertake this important work after the Waitangi Day weekend.”

He said that the works would include rehabilitation of Gibbston Valley Road, strengthening of Victoria Bridge, and strengthening and maintenance of Makarora River Bridge and the Haast Pass route into Otago.

“As the work programme progresses so will the closure types, including some overnight full road closures,” Mr Stewart said.

“This work is heavily weather dependent and more specific details will be released weekly once confirmed.”

He urged road users to check progress of the works via the Agency’s website, which can be accessed at this PS News link.
